What is Faden Quartz and how is it formed?

Faden Quartz crystals are identified by natural platy Quartz formations that contain fluid or gaseous filled chambers that appear as inclusions of white threads running along the crystal, perpendicular to the terminations, often double termination.

Faden quartz forms in fissures in the host rock that widen slowly and steadily. Quartz crystals inside the host rock will rupture when the fissure opens, but heal quickly.

The fissures continue to open and the crystal will repeatedly crack and heal, leaving a scar of liquid and gas inclusions in the crystal, the white thread, denoting Faden Quartz.

In rare cases, the Faden Quartz also contains green Chlorite.

Faden Quartz is most commonly found in the alpine mountains of Pakistan.
